I like the idea of you brought up of whatever round that is repaid.

But at the same time I generally don’t see this as a huge issue. How many times is this an issue? How often do the players even become worth anything?

Remember the Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes. That was a huge deal and he has largely been meh. I mean he is an NHLer which you want with any round draft pick.

Generally speaking guys who stay that long in college tend to breakout because they are developing more. Yes goalies are pure wildcards but I still don’t sweat it to much. Obviously I’d prefer he sign but that’s the risk you take.

The only time I think any compensation happens is if a first round pick isn't signed by his drafting team and signs with another team the other team gets a second round pick. Kevin Hayes was drafted late in the first round by Chicago but signed with the Rangers and I believe the Blackhawks got another second round pick at the end of the second round. I don't think this is that big of a deal, you can't really punish someone for delaying their career and losing out on money well they get an education and then finally get to determine where they want to play

I think you’re right. The “compensation” would probably be to avoid tampering, but I really felt for David Poile when Vesey left him at the altar. Either way, so many prospects end up not making it, and to your point the hype doesn’t always follow through

My concern is really based on tampering more than anything. NYR really goes after these kids. They have a fixed ELC amount, so easy risk to take. At least try to keep teams honest in going after the prospects

One more point. These players aren’t just on paper, in the system. All the development camps, training camps, work with nutritionists and strength trainers etc all is a significant investment from the team that drafted them. They have personnel checking on them all year long and working with their coaches to help them improve. If an organization genuinely wants to sign one of these kids and they walk, that’s worth at least recognizing.

I guess so, but really doesn't matter? Any players that are drafted lower are the ones that are Cherry picked and don't turn out to be really anything in the NHL anyway

So Keith has a Red Wings page. Is this normal for unsigned draft picks??

I’ve never seen it. If it goes the other way and he signs Id be pretty happy. Sources get it wrong sometimes. It’s all good

I’ve never seen it either. Makes me wonder if something is in the works the public doesn’t know yet.

Yzerman said he was late to the presser “taking care of something” he never stops working

If it appears the KP situation is still up in the air by the draft do you think yzerman takes a long look/potentially trade up from the Washington pick if cossa is there?

With the wings likely 2-3 years away from actually pushing out of this rebuild I have to think yzerman will want to address his goalie of the future this off-season. I know I’ve brought this up here before with selecting wallstadt in the top 10 but I just thought that now with the Washington pick in the fold that the fans/Stevie will be able to have their cake and eat it too.

I could see him doing that and also acquiring a guy like he did with Bishop in Tampa if Bernier leaves.

I’m at the point where anything goes. Yzerman makes bold moves out of nowhere. Keep track of these scenarios. You never know if you’ve nailed it!

This happens with many players each season, not all from College Ranks. There is no need to change the rules. Most teams that encounter this issue trade the prospect.

Unless the prospect is an obvious bust or has stated his intention to sign with only one particular team, the GM should either be able to either convince the prospect to sign or be swift enough to convince another GM to trade for him. Steve should easily be able to handle this situation.

Goalies are voodoo, there are always plenty on the market or in FA. Just draft enough from the 2nd round and down to keep your prospect pipeline operational.

Its happening more and more with more of the kids choosing college. Why would a team trade for the prospect when that GM would also know he will be a FA if he doesn't sign with the team that drafted him. I like the idea of the compensation.
wyatt kalynuk didnt sign this year and became a FA rookie and signed with chicago, 9 points in 21 games isn't too bad for a rookie defenseman.

If Cossa falls to the caps pick fine but yeah otherwise just keep taking the best player available. The way this team struggles to score it won’t matter if there a shooter tutor in net for them.

The collage format should be universal for all players. Summer after they turn 21 either be signed of be a free agent. No draft capital back to drafting team.
